In today's world, social media has become a ubiquitous presence in our lives. From the moment we wake up, we are bombarded with notifications, messages, and updates from our online connectedness. But what if we took a break? What if we put down our phones and turned off our computers for just a day and a half?
I recently decided to do just that. I wanted to see what it would be like to disconnect from the constant stream of online activity and focus on the world around me. While I'll admit that I cheated a few times by scrolling through my social media feeds, overall I was able to stay away from posting and only checked in occasionally to see what was going on.
The experience was both freeing and eye-opening. Without the distraction of social media, I found myself with more time to focus on writing. I was able to work on multiple book projects and respond to a backlog of emails that had been piling up. It was refreshing to have the time and mental space to devote to creative pursuits that are often put on the back burner by the constant demands of social media.
But the biggest benefit of being off social media was the increased presence I had in the real world. Without constantly checking my phone or getting lost in my online feeds, I was able to focus on the people and places around me. I spent more time outside, reading in the park, and catching up with friends. I even ventured out to try new activities that I might not have had the time or inclination to pursue otherwise.
Overall, being off social media for a day and a half provided a refreshing break from the constant noise of online activity. It allowed me to focus on my writing, catch up on work, and enjoy the company of those around me. While I may not have been perfect in sticking to my goal, I'm already considering extending the time I spend unplugged. It's amazing how much more present we can be in our own lives when we step away from the endless cycle of notifications and updates.
