In the endless scroll of YouTube, there seems to be a growing trend with creators over 40 and over 50. The focus? Cold, hard cash. It feels like everyone is out here flexing about how much money they made, how they monetized their channel, and how you too can be swimming in stacks of ad revenue if you just "hit that like and subscribe button!" Sure, it's impressive that they've turned their hobbies into a six-figure side hustle, but what about real life skills? I mean, aren't there more pressing things we should be talking about, especially for the younger generation?
Back in 2011, I launched my YouTube channel, and it wasn't about how I could make bank off views. It was about creating real content, something meaningful, funny, and yes, a little bit shady. Remember Erica Virginia Put the Phone Down? That comedy skit took off, racking up over 200,000 views. It was relatable, it was entertaining, and above all, it was real. People need humor, they need life hacks, and they need to see content that isn’t just one big money grab.
Don’t get me wrong, the older crowd monetizing their channels is great if it inspires someone—but where's the depth? Talking about "how I made $10,000 this month" is cool, but how about how I dealt with rejection, or how to budget that first paycheck? Instead, we’re left with flashy cars, sponsored vacations, and "be like me" tutorials that feel hollow.
For those who haven’t yet checked out my channel, maybe now's the time. It's called Special on YouTube—you'll find a bit of everything there. From comedy skits like Erica Virginia to real-life content that isn’t afraid to get a little messy. Sure, I’m not here to boast about making thousands from ad deals, but if you want a slice of reality sprinkled with some shade, you know where to find me.
