My Journey with KDP in July: What I Learned About Not Making Money and Moving Forward

My Journey with KDP in July: What I Learned About Not Making Money and Moving Forward

In July, I had high hopes for my Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) sales. I had worked hard to write, edit, and publish my eBooks, and I was looking forward to seeing some return on my investment. But to my surprise—and disappointment—I didn’t make a single dollar. Yes, you read that right. I didn’t make any money from my KDP efforts in July.

It’s frustrating when you’ve poured time and energy into something and the results don’t meet your expectations. Naturally, I felt a little upset. But after a while, I took a step back, looked at the situation objectively, and realized that this setback is just part of the journey. Live and learn, right? That’s exactly what I had to do: let go, let God, and focus on what I could take away from the experience.

What I Learned from Not Making Money in July

1. Patience is Key First and foremost, I learned that success with KDP—or any form of passive income—doesn’t happen overnight. The eBook market is saturated, and unless you’re bringing something unique and valuable to the table, it’s going to take time to stand out. I realized that patience is key in this business, and July was just a bump in the road, not the end of it.

2. Marketing Matters If I’m being honest, I didn’t put as much effort into marketing my eBooks as I should have. It’s easy to assume that once your book is live on Amazon, readers will magically find it. But in reality, the work doesn’t stop after hitting the “publish” button. Promoting your book on social media, leveraging email marketing, and utilizing Amazon ads are all crucial steps to getting your book in front of the right audience.

3. Diversification of Content is Important Looking back at my July sales (or lack thereof), I realized that my portfolio of eBooks might not have been as diverse as I thought. In today’s market, readers want variety. They’re looking for something fresh and exciting, and if all your eBooks target the same audience or topic, you might limit your sales potential. This was a reminder to diversify my content and try different genres or formats to see what works best.

4. Consistent Publishing Yields Better Results One major lesson I took away from this experience is that consistency matters. If you only publish once in a while and expect major returns, you’ll likely be disappointed. KDP rewards authors who consistently put out new material. It’s about building a library of work that attracts readers over time, not relying on one or two books to do all the heavy lifting.

5. You Won’t Always Make Money, and That’s Okay Let’s be real: you won’t always make money from every book you publish, especially if you’re just starting. And that’s okay. Passive income isn’t passive until you’ve put in the work, and sometimes that work doesn’t pay off right away. July taught me that publishing eBooks is like planting seeds. Some might sprout quickly, while others take longer to grow.

Moving Forward: My Advice for Aspiring KDP Authors

If you’re in a similar boat and wondering how to move forward when you don’t see immediate success with KDP, here’s my advice:

1. Reevaluate Your Marketing Strategy Ask yourself: Am I doing enough to promote my books? Marketing is crucial, and if your books aren’t selling, it might be time to revisit your strategy. Explore new marketing channels like Pinterest, Instagram, or even TikTok, depending on your target audience. Consider running Amazon ads or promoting your book through email newsletters.

2. Write What You Love, But Also What Sells Passion is important when writing books, but you also need to be aware of what readers are looking for. Browse through the Amazon best-seller lists in your genre. What’s trending? Are there popular niches you haven’t tapped into yet? Writing what sells doesn’t mean abandoning your passion; it means finding a balance between your interests and market demand.

3. Be Consistent and Keep Publishing It’s easy to get discouraged after one or two books don’t perform as expected. But if you want long-term success with KDP, consistency is key. Keep writing, keep publishing, and eventually, you’ll build a library that generates passive income over time. Set a goal for how many books you want to publish each year and stick to it. The more content you have available, the better your chances of attracting readers.

4. Learn from Each Experience I didn’t make money in July, but I learned valuable lessons about marketing, patience, and persistence. Every setback is an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve your approach. Ask yourself: What went wrong? What can I do better next time? Use those insights to refine your process and move forward with confidence.

5. Don’t Give Up Success doesn’t come easy, and KDP is no different. If you’re serious about building an income stream through self-publishing, you need to be in it for the long haul. Stay focused on your goals, keep improving your craft, and don’t let temporary setbacks discourage you from continuing.

Questions to Consider

Have you experienced a similar situation with KDP where you didn’t make the money you expected? How did you handle it?

What marketing strategies have worked best for you when promoting your eBooks?

If you haven’t published anything yet, what’s holding you back from getting started?

In conclusion, while I didn’t make any money in July, I’ve come to understand that this is just part of the process. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I’ve learned valuable lessons that I’ll carry with me as I continue my journey with KDP, and I’m excited to see what the future holds.

What will your journey look like?

🍿 Once Upon a Time in Beverly Hills (minus some ladies)

🍿 Once Upon a Time in Beverly Hills (minus some ladies) RHOBH used to be about glitz, glam, drama, and personalities with something to lose — or gain. At its peak, it had chaotic friendships, sparkling wardrobes, back-room blowups, and a twisted sense of loyalty. But lately? It’s beginning to feel less like “Real Housewives” and more like “Real House-of-Cards.” And this season — with the exit of Garcelle Beauvais — might just prove it. Garcelle wasn’t just another cast member. She was one of the few who seemed to bring a bit of heart and a dash of backbone to the chaos. And yet — after five seasons — she walked. Dramatically. Without a reunion photo. Without apologies. Saying bluntly, “I’m done.” Sweetheart, same. So yes — I’m done too. 🔥 Why I’m Ready to Drop the “Housewives” Label 1. Loyalty isn’t a thing anymore — it’s a sales pitch It used to be that friendships on RHOBH were messy and flawed but lived-in. Back-stage back-ups, side alliances, shady calls, bu...

Reality TV, Redemption & Receipts: What Are You Signing Up For?

Reality TV, Redemption & Receipts: What Are You Signing Up For? When you say yes to reality TV, what are you really saying yes to? Former two-time America’s Next Top Model contestant Lisa D'Amato is speaking out ahead of the Netflix documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, and baby… it’s giving unfinished business. And if you’re someone dreaming of going on reality TV (and I know you love writing about reality shows and how to get cast 👀), this conversation matters. Let’s break this down — and ask the real questions. Why Watch the Documentary at All? Lisa says she’ll be watching the Netflix documentary — but not for nostalgia. She wants to see how the experiences are edited. That word right there: edited. Because when you film a reality show, you don’t own the narrative. The producers do. She’s concerned the stories may be “softened.” That trauma might be packaged neatly. That accountability might feel… polished. So here’s the first question: 👉 ...
