It’s been nine months since I first published my books on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), and I still haven’t made $100. It’s frustrating, but the process has been a valuable learning experience. Here’s why I think my earnings haven’t reached that $100 mark and what I’m doing to change that.
First, I didn’t invest much time in promoting my books. I thought just publishing would be enough to get eyes on my work, but I quickly learned that KDP is highly competitive. Without marketing efforts like social media promotion, email newsletters, or collaborations with other authors, my books haven’t been discovered by many readers.
Second, I haven’t fully optimized my keywords or categories. Choosing the right keywords can make a huge difference in visibility, and I initially went with very general terms. Recently, I’ve been diving deeper into niche markets, researching keywords that are less competitive but still in demand.
Third, I published without a long-term plan. My books are a mix of topics and genres, and I now realize that focusing on a specific niche would help build a loyal audience. Readers who enjoy one of my books might not connect with my others because they’re so different. I’m now working on staying consistent in my genre and style to attract the right audience.
If you’re also struggling to make money with KDP, my advice is to focus on promotion, refine your keywords, and develop a clear, consistent brand. I’m not there yet, but I’m learning every day. And with persistence, I know success will come.
Advice for KDP Beginners:
Promote your work across platforms.
Research and optimize keywords.
Focus on a specific niche or genre.
